Project:
Extending a Grade I listed manor house
to blend old with new
Architect: Yiangou Architects
Winner of the 2024 Georgian Group Architectural Award: “New building within a Georgian context.”
In the heart of the idyllic Woodford Valley, this manor house underwent a remarkable extension, working closely with Yiangou Architects.
The privilege of extending this Grade I listed building resulted in an exquisite celebration of traditional craftsmanship. The exterior combines natural dressed stone, flint, and handmade brickwork, all carefully matched to the historic fabric, with large stone coping parapets, a lead roof, and a bell tower with lead rainwater pipes.
Inside, purpose-made windows, doors with internal shutter boxes, and high-quality cabinetry bring a sense of timeless elegance, while the existing services were skillfully integrated to ensure the house remained fully operational throughout the project.
The result is a seamless blend of old and new, with every detail crafted to reflect the original building’s character.
“It is very rare to have the opportunity of building such a large extension on a Grade I listed building. As ever, the project presented many challenges of working within a private family house. The result was fantastic, and we were delighted that this has been recognised by the Georgian Group!’’
