Formerly the residence of the rector of St Nicholas Church, the original 17th Century building was substantially rebuilt after a fire in the mid nineteenth century to create a suitably high status building to serve as the manor house. On approach to the house, the long driveway sweeps past the church to the left and provides impressive long views of the Classically proportioned south elevation.
Mouldings were appointed to work with architects Johnston Cave from Oxford on a substantial project to significantly extend, alter and restore the house to provide modern 21st Century living space. A three storey extension to the south was built using local Marnhull stone in its random form, dressed and formalised on the quoins and window surrounds using Bath stone ashlar. The roof is covered in a handmade clay plain tile.
The main house endured a complete restoration, suitably encased in a large temporary roof to protect the fragile structure (and the workers) from the worst of the British weather. The alterations included a vast new lantern light and an enlarged south window in the Entrance Hall to introduce huge amounts of natural light. Chimneys were lined in pumice to provide safe and efficient open fires. New mechanical and electrical services were threaded cleverly throughout the building using discreet distribution within voids and service risers to disguise their existence. High quality cabinetry and decorative finishes helped to top-off a beautifully restored house.
“One of the key strengths of the Mouldings approach is that they completely understand that their future business with the owners of country houses relies heavily on their current performance. Tim will acknowledge that all building projects experience problems along the way. It is Mouldings attitude towards resolving these problems during and long after a project is complete that is exemplary and highly unusual in their industry. Mouldings did a wonderful job and it was a pleasure to work with them.’’
