From the construction of the very first café and guest houses at Stonehenge a century ago, to the ongoing care and maintenance of one of the world’s most visited heritage sites today – Moulding’s relationship with Stonehenge is a story of enduring craftsmanship, trust, and pride.
This year marks 100 years since Moulding first worked at Stonehenge – a milestone that reflects the enduring nature of the relationship we’ve built with the site and the people who care for it.
Our involvement began in the early 1920s with the construction of the original café and guest houses at Stonehenge Visitor Centre – buildings that, while no longer standing, established the working relationship that has continued ever since.
In the decades that followed, Moulding built an increasingly close working relationship with English Heritage – the charity responsible for the care, management, and presentation of Stonehenge to the millions of visitors who travel from around the world to see it each year. Today, that relationship extends across English Heritage sites throughout the South-West of England, encompassing cyclical maintenance programmes as well as larger site-wide project works.
Working at Stonehenge is not like working on an ordinary site. Every decision, every material choice, every method of working has to be considered in the context of a site that is open to the public and needs to stay that way. Keeping disruption to a minimum, maintaining high standards of presentation, and ensuring the site remains safe and accessible at all times – these are the things that shape how we approach every project.
100 Years: what it means to us
To mark 100 years of association with any client would be a significant achievement. To mark 100 years of association with Stonehenge – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most recognisable landmarks on earth – is something that fills everyone at Moulding with enormous pride.
This milestone is a testament not just to the quality of our work, but to the relationships we build and the values we uphold. Trust, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to doing the job properly – these are the principles that have sustained our partnership across generations, and across the many changes that both Stonehenge and our own business have experienced over the years.
We are also acutely aware that this is not just our story to tell. It is a story that belongs equally to the teams at English Heritage who have trusted us with this work, and to the craftspeople – past and present – within our own business who have carried it out with such dedication and skill. Without them, none of this would have been possible.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with English Heritage with the same dedication, skill, and quiet pride that has defined our work at Stonehenge for the past hundred years – always with the unmistakable Moulding touch.
